Date: Monday 6 February 2023 (ball is thrown at 10.30am from St Ia’s Parish Church Wall near Porthmeor Beach)
Type: Ancient rugby-like Cornish game in St Ives for children and teenagers on the beach below St Ia’s Parish Church Wall
Suitable for: Kids and teenagers only to play the game but adults are encouraged to watch this tradition that dates back at least 1,000 years. Nickanan Night 2023 (also known as Roguery Night 2023 and Peasen Monday 2023)

Date: Monday 20 February 2023
Type: The day before Shrove Tuesday. This has been celebrated in Cornwall for centuries and used to include locals creating ‘Jack o’ Lent’ straw figures before burning them in villages like Polperro
Suitable for: Pea soup lovers, basically. The dish is eaten as in days of old, it meant that peas were used up ahead of Lent. Some Cornish youngsters may also cherry knock on doors in an activity once called ‘nicky nicky nine doors’, hence the name Nickanan Night…
Location: Throughout Cornwall, although the night is nowhere near as popular as cooking up some pancakes the following day!
