TREVOR HAMBIDGE, FORMER FRONTMAN OF CORNISH BAND THE BEUTONS, RELEASES A NEW SINGLE ON FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2024 CALLED “SAILING OFF THE EDGE OF THE WORLD”. LISTEN OUT FOR A CRACKING NEW TUNE…
You can take the musician out of Cornwall but you can never take Cornwall out of the musician. That sums up Trevor Hambidge well. The former frontman of Cornish band the Beutons may have left the Duchy but those jangly seaside vibes are still there in his music.
Hambidge, now based in Lisbon, releases a new single on Friday 16 February 2024 entitled “Sailing Off The Edge Of The World”. It’s indeed a jangly, breezy, sunny and warm pop-tinged indie-rock track that literally sings about ‘not coming home’ as he’s now ‘sailing off the edge of the world’.
The single, which channels outfits like The La’s and The Coral, actually kicks off what the artist says will be ‘an exciting 2024 release schedule’, with two EPs and a new album on the horizon this year.
Hambidge says: “The song provides a taste of what’s to come on the upcoming EPs and album this year – featuring 12-string, acoustic and super-clean electric guitar layers. It explores the frustrations and feelings of futility associated with middle age and the reflections of having burned so brightly – but briefly – as a part of an upcoming band before seeing my musical career derailed by forces outside my control.”
Indie-rock combo the Beutons from Cornwall burst on to the indie scene in 2013 with debut record “I Didn’t Ask For It And I Don’t Want It”. The band became an instant hit in the South West before gaining national interest as they supported the likes of Sony’s I Am Giant, Britpop legends Reef and Dodgy and even Charlotte Church at Focus Wales 2013.
Hambidge says: “Then just as suddenly we dropped off the musical map after the band broke up citing personal reasons. Our final track, which was penned by me, was called “Last Dance With Mary Jane” and that tune has gone on to rack up over 150,000 streams on Spotify, despite the band break-up in 2015.”
“Sailing Off The Edge Of The World” is part of Hambidge’s recent comeback as a songwriter and recording artist. He says: “The track will be distributed via Landr as a digital-only release under my own Less Economically Developed Music label and serves as a follow-up to my 2023 EP, “Beneath The Cottonwood Trees”.”
