Cornish folk music will be on the menu during a long, jam-packed weekend at the Bude and Stratton Folk Festival 2023. This friendly folky fest on Cornwall’s north coast, which took place between 26 and 30 May (mostly) at the Falcon Hotel in Bude for the 2022 edition, is held annually around the late May Bank Holiday weekend and features some of the best song, dance, music and storytelling that you’re going to find all year in Cornwall. There are always kids events and some busking to be done in the town but the bulk of the fun happens in and around the hotel.
The Falcon welcomes all sorts of guest performers from around the UK to the festival and then there are dances, workshops, open mic stages, barn dances and, well, just loads more besides. Audience participation is always encouraged and there’s a togetherness at this folk festival that its regular visitors come back for and look forward to every year.
Highlights of 2022’s week-long programme included concerts from the likes of Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs, as well as The Wilderness Yet. There were also short story sessions and open mics in nearby St Michael’s Church, sea song and shanty gigs in the Falcon Terrace and late night singing in the hotel’s Ballroom. If you’re a folk music fan, this is one long weekend you don’t want to miss.
