GOONHILLY 60 IS ON SATURDAY 23 JULY BETWEEN 1PM AND 1AM. EXPECT FUN AND FESTIVITIES FOR THE SPACE AGE…
Anyone who’s visited ‘Wild West’ Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula at any point over the past six decades will have encountered an otherworldly sight. If you don’t know they’re coming, you’ll have seen an unexpected collection of giant satellite dishes pointing skyward coming into view on your approach. These monsters, which are visible all over the Lizard, make up Goonhilly Earth Station, a giant radio-communications site that’s played an integral role in some of the UK’s most iconic TV moments, including the first live transatlantic television broadcasts, Muhammad Ali’s ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and the Apollo Eleven moon landings.
Well, they are about to be part of another iconic moment, only this time it’s not about TV. We’re talking about a live show that celebrates this entire site’s birthday. Goonhilly 60 marks 60 years since this Cornish landmark was born by staging a host of intergalactic festivities mixed with some great earthly pleasures.
For anyone with an interest in the otherworldly, this’ll be one not to miss. Expect a galaxy of events and activities on the downs, from a host of interesting talks, a night-time drone display and even a satellite-sized pub quiz. The entire space shindig is backdropped by the giant dishes themselves and there is to be some great music from the likes of Jelly Jazz, the Kaleidoscope Orchestra and The UK Pink Floyd Experience. Plus, at the end of it all you can sleep under the stars near the site just outside of Helston.
So, if you’re looking for a party with an atmosphere, you know where to head this weekend…
