THE JOHN DYER GALLERY EXHIBITION 2023 TAKES PLACE AT THE HISTORIC CRYPT GALLERY IN NORWAY SQUARE BETWEEN SUNDAY 14 AND FRIDAY 19 MAY 2023. THESE ARE ALL NEW PAINTINGS CREATED BY LOCAL ARTISTS…

Three artists in Cornwall are showing their most recent paintings at the John Dyer Gallery Exhibition 2023 at the historic Crypt Gallery in St Ives’ Norway Square. John Dyer himself, as well as Ted Dyer and Joanne Short, will have their striking works on show between Sunday 14 and Friday 19 May 2023.

It is the first in-person exhibition by the John Dyer Gallery, which is based in Falmouth‘s Melvill Road, since COVID-19 reared its ugly head a few years ago. John Dyer says: “This one is exceptional as it will allow you to view a wide range of our gallery paintings next to the latest paintings of Cornwall by all our artists and a unique collection of new paintings from Kenya that myself and Joanne Short completed during and after a recent expedition.”

The paintings will be on show throughout the week from Sunday 14 May 2023. There’s also a private view between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday 13 May. The whole collection of new works will be available to both view and buy on the official page from 6pm on 13 May. Click on the ‘website’ link in the yellow box above to take a peek.

Also on the menu is a ‘stunning small collection of new paintings’ of Cornwall by Ted Dyer. These pieces are exhibited alongside the Cornish artist’s ‘extraordinary recent works’. John Dyer says: “The paintings in the exhibition all have a solid link to the environment and biodiversity. The African canvases focus on endangered wildlife and the Maasai tribe and culture threatened by climate change. The Cornish canvases celebrate the wildflowers and ocean life that can be found around the coast.”

John Dyer, who is the ‘artist in residence’ for the Tall Ships Races 2023, a series of races that comes to Falmouth in August, has an official painting for the event which will be displayed at the exhibition. Plus one of the local artist’s largest-ever paintings will be on show. The 48×60-inch piece depicts St Michael’s Mount ‘with a glimpse of underwater life and even a humpback whale’!

Joanne Short also exhibits ‘some of her most significant ever oil paintings’, including representations of Tresco Abbey Gardens and the Helford Passage.

The Crypt Gallery, which is run by the St Ives Society of Artists, lies beneath the church building and Mariners Gallery of the St Ives Society of Artists in Norway Square. In the 1940s, the gallery became the base for artists like sculptor Barbara Hepworth, her former husband Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Sven Berlin, who were once known collectively known as The Crypt Group.
