REMEMBRANCE DAY CORNWALL 2023 CAN BE A SOLEMN AFFAIR BUT IT CAN ALSO BE A LIVELY COMMEMORATION OF ALL SOLDIERS WHO HAVE DIED. HERE WE SELECT A FEW REMEMBRANCE EVENTS IN CORNWALL 2023 YOU MAY WANT TO SEE…
Few days in the calendar are as poignant as Remembrance Day. Taking place on Saturday 11 November 2023, the event marks the anniversary of the armistice signing on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, signalling the end of the First World War.
It, of course, commemorates that anniversary but over the years it’s come to be a way to remember all of the men and women who have lost their lives or freedom as a result of war. It’s come to be a reminder that there should be no wars. Ever.
In Cornwall, Remembrance Day is always well supported, with parades, church services and other commemorative events taking place across the Duchy, usually on the following Sunday. Thousands observe the traditional two-minute silence from 11am on the Saturday and thousands more proudly wear their poppies and watch serving military personnel and veterans laying wreaths and remembering fallen comrades on the Sunday.
It’s always a time for reflection as well as remembrance. A time for honouring those Cornish men and women who have given their lives for others during combat.
Look out on your local town council or perhaps the Royal British Legion’s website for any Cornwall Remembrance Day 2023 events you may want to join. There are far too many for us to list but here is a little flavour:
Liskeard: The Liskeard Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Parade 2023 will head off from the town’s Cattle Market at 10.30am on Sunday 12 November 2023. It will march to the War Memorial in Castle Park for some wreath laying before heading to St Martin’s Church for a special civic service. Later, it will march on to Webb’s House in Pike Street for a salute.
St Ives: There is a two-minute silence at the St Ives War Memorial from 11am on Saturday 11 November 2023 that anyone can attend. Then, at 10.40am on Sunday 12 November 2023, the Royal British Legion, St Ives town Council and other organisations get together at The Guildhall in Street An Pol in St Ives before proceeding to the War Memorial via Tregenna Place and High Street where there is a two-minute silence and wreath laying at 11am. From about 11.15am, the parade proceeds to St Ia’s Parish Church in St Andrews Street for a special service of remembrance before a last march later on back to the Guildhall for the national anthem.
Lelant: The Lelant 2023 Remembrance Day service takes place at St Uny’s Church on Church Road at 9.25am on Sunday 12 November 2023. Then there’s some wreath laying at the war memorials inside the church at 10am before everyone proceeds to the War Memorial in Fore Street at 10.30am. At 11am there is a two-minute silence and more wreath laying.
Newquay: The Newquay Remembrance Day Parade 2023 goes from Fore Street Car Park at 10am on Sunday 12 November 2023 and then heads across town towards St Michael’s Church. Wreaths are laid at Newquay‘s war memorial.
St Endellion: The Collegiate Church of St Endellion near Port Isaac holds its Remembrance Sunday service on Sunday 12 November 2023 from 10.50am. Other churches in the area also hold their Cornwall Remembrance Day 2023 church services around the same time.
Truro: On Saturday 11 November 2023, head to the War Memorial on Boscawen Street at 11am to mark Armistice Day with others. A ‘Truro Remembers Walking Tour’ led by poet and historian Bert Biscoe takes place around the city from 2pm but book ahead for that. On Sunday 12 November 2023, a Remembrance Service Eucharist 2023 takes place at Truro Cathedral between 10am and 11.30am. There’s also a parade from the cathedral to Boscawen Street for wreath laying from 2.15pm and a Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance 2023 back at the cathedral from 3.15pm. A ‘Requiem for the Fallen’ service is at the cathedral between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
Falmouth: On Sunday 12 November 2023, the town’s annual service and parade marks the important day. Anyone can assemble on The Moor prior to 11am before the parade heads off to Kimberley Park for the service. There’s a two-minute silence and wreath laying at 11am before the parade marches on back down to The Moor.
