THE ST AGNES CARNIVAL 2025 TAKES PLACE ON SATURDAY, 2ND AUGUST 2025, WITH THE ANNUAL PARADE STARTING AT 5 PM. COME AND WITNESS SOME OF THE MOST CREATIVE FLOATS AND COSTUMES IN CORNWALL AT THIS VIBRANT VILLAGE CELEBRATION…

There’s nothing quite like a traditional Cornish carnival, and the St Agnes Carnival stands out as a shining example. Set in the picturesque village of St Agnes, nestled on Cornwall’s north coast between Perranporth and Portreath, this event has been a cornerstone of community spirit for over a century. From its early days, when miners, bal-maidens, and fishing folk lined the streets, to today’s lively gatherings, the carnival continues to captivate both locals and visitors alike.

The festivities kick off at 5 PM with the much-anticipated annual parade. Starting from the carnival field on Goonvrea Road, the procession winds its way through Church Town and along Trevaunance Road, culminating at the St Agnes Sports Club in Enys Park. Here, prizes for the most outstanding floats and costumes are awarded, and attendees can enjoy live music, delicious food, and a well-stocked bar.

Known for its imaginative displays, the St Agnes Carnival procession showcases the community’s creativity. Participants don elaborate costumes and design intricate floats, with local bands, singers, dancers, and performers of all ages engaging with the enthusiastic crowds. Judging commences in the carnival field at 4:30 PM, just before the parade sets off.

Leading the parade is the legendary giant, Bolster. According to local lore, Bolster was a giant who once roamed the cliffs near St Agnes, feasting on sheep and meeting his demise through a cunning plan devised by a local maiden. Today, Bolster’s towering figure is a highlight of the carnival, symbolizing the rich folklore of the area.

Each year, hundreds gather to experience this unique event, often hailed as one of the best carnivals in Cornwall. Organizing such a spectacle requires significant effort and resources, with costs reaching up to £6,000 annually. Donations are warmly welcomed, and volunteers will be present with collection buckets throughout the procession.

For those driving to the event, parking is available in a designated field on Penwinnick Road, a short stroll from the parade route. Please note that streets along the procession path and adjacent roads will be closed for a few hours in the afternoon and evening; further details will be provided closer to the event date.

The 2024 St Agnes Carnival was a resounding success, with standout entries such as “Spaceport St Agnes” by SLOBS winning ‘Best in Carnival,’ “Madagascar” by Chapel Porth Cafe securing ‘Best Under-16s with a Float,’ and “Rocky Horror” by The Miners Arms and Red Lion earning ‘Best Musical Contribution.’

We wholeheartedly recommend attending the 2025 St Agnes Carnival. It’s a vibrant, creative, and popular event that celebrates the village’s rich legends and offers an authentic taste of Cornish carnival tradition. Remember to bring some cash for donations and your camera on 2nd August 2025—you’ll capture memories to cherish and share!
