STERTS ARTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE IN CORNWALL IS LAUNCHING ‘INSPIRING THEATRE EXPERIENCES’ FOR EIGHT-TO-11-YEAR-OLDS BETWEEN MAY AND AUGUST 2025. HELP NURTURE THEIR CREATIVITY AT STERTS…

There’s not one but two fab theatrical experiences for young people being run at Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre on the edge of Bodmin Moor at Upton Cross, near Liskeard during the summer of 2025. This is one way to get some free time away from the rugrats during the summer holidays while also helping to nurture their creativity and stage presence.

The first experience is actually run during the May half-term 2025 in Cornwall. It is led by Devon-based actor Philippa Gunning and it’s called ‘Play In A Week’. It takes place at Sterts between Tuesday 27 and Friday 30 May 2025.

This is a four-day creative workshop where children are encouraged to devise their own theatre piece from scratch. Join Pip for a four-day adventure into the world of theatre-making, devising a new story and exploring creative techniques. The week finishes with a performance for family and friends at 3pm on the Friday.

Participants must be aged eight to 11-years-old only and they must bring a packed lunch each day. It costs £80 per child and runs between 10am and 4pm each day. Find out more and book a spot: here.

Wake up to a special youth-led production!

The second experience at Sterts over the summer of 2025 is ‘Wake Up!’. This is a new theatre production for young people and takes place between June and August 2025.

‘Wake Up!’ will actually be the first youth-led show to be staged in the venue’s new Barn Theatre. The show, written by Jenna Drury and directed by Philippa Gunning, is only for eight-to-11-year-olds, however. The production helps children ‘engage in critical conversations about environmental issues through theatre’ and enables them ‘to learn to express themselves freely as they experience the joy of theatre’.

If your budding Brad Pitt or Emma Stone is interested in taking part then they need to audition first. These audition workshops are relaxed, inclusive and fun, and there are no lines to learn in advance. There will be two auditions, where young people will work together to perform small sections of the script.

There are up to 22 places available in the cast. Auditions slots are now available, plus the auditions are free. The cost of being involved in the production, however, is £100 per child. Fees will be payable upon casting. The cast must be available for all rehearsal, tech and performance dates. Plus, a consent form must be completed prior to the audition. Copies will be available on the door.

The audition day is held between 1.30pm and 3pm or 4pm and 5.30pm on Sunday 8 June 2025. You only need to attend one slot. Your child will then know around Tuesday 10 June 2025 whether they have been successful in their audition. Other key dates include readthrough sessions on Sunday 22 June and Sunday 13 July 2025, plus rehearsal weeks between Monday 28 July and Wednesday 6 August 2025.

The performances will take place on Friday 8 August 2025. All are invited to watch the shows. To discover more and to book your child’s free audition slot, take a look: here.

Break a leg! Or on second thoughts, don’t! All you need to do is help inspire your little actor or actress to tread the boards at Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre this summer.
