A COUPLE IN MUSIC AND IN LOVE, SUTHERING BRING SUBLIME FOLK STORYTELLING TO PENZANCE ON THURSDAY 14 JULY

John and Yoko. Beyonce and Jay-Z. Music occasionally throws up a talented couple who don’t only make beautiful music together but also make beautiful… ah, you get the picture. Joining the incredible forces of music and love together can create something as unique as it is beautiful. This describes Suthering well. A couple in both music and in love who are creating something unique and beautiful.

Actually, the best way to describe this Devon-based two-woman act is to say it’s a journey. A journey in folk storytelling, where the female is always at the heart of the piece. Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall create an array of larger-than-life characters in a bid to ‘unearth the heroines of folk’ while carving out new narratives for women along the way. They ooze chemistry and they bring an arsenal of instruments along with them, including flute, piano, guitar and whistles, all serving the purpose of telling a story, well, as beautifully as possible.

Suthering, which is an old regional dialect for the sighing of the wind, write their own songs and curate an evening of crisp vocal harmonies, moving music, spellbinding stories and the feeling that you’re sharing something special with the rest of the audience. They have played the BBC Introducing stage before, as well as Glastonbury, but their trip to The Acorn Theatre in Penzance on Thursday 14 July should be one of their best gigs yet. We don’t know that but we’re hoping that’s true because we love spellbinding up-and-coming folk acts down here. If music be the food of love then play on, Suthering, play on…
