A Penryn-based entrepreneur has launched Biography Studio, a guided life story service that helps people revisit, record and reflect on their lives in their own words before receiving a professionally printed hardback book.
Biography Studio (biographystudio.com) was founded by Richard Abrahams, who lives near Penryn with his wife and young son. The service guides users through the chapters of a life, from childhood and identity through to relationships, work, culture and legacy, with a structured question framework that invites genuine depth at every stage. Users can answer by typing or speaking aloud, with an optional editorial layer that shapes their words into a finished hardback book.
“This is not just about the book,” says Abrahams. “It is about the experience of going back through your life with depth and intention, revisiting the memories, the people, the moments that made you who you are. The book is the record. But what people tell me moves them most is the process of getting there.”
Cornwall as the destination
For Abrahams, the move to Cornwall was not an escape but an arrival. Born in Plymouth, he left school without the results he had hoped for and spent eight years working as a sheet metal tradesman before going to university in his mid-twenties. He went on to complete a Masters and PhD in ethnography at the University of Nottingham and the University of Hong Kong, spending years conducting field research in China on questions of identity and how people construct meaning from their lives and their communities.
After academia he moved into the corporate world, eventually leading a business unit covering Asia Pacific for an international investment information company. He and his wife moved to Cornwall several years ago, fulfilling a long-held dream. Biography Studio is the culmination of everything that came before it.
“I have always loved learning and building things,” he says. “But I always reached the point where I had mastered something and needed the next challenge. Biography Studio felt like a natural convergence: technology, personal histories, the academic background, and finally the freedom to do something entirely my own.”
Built on research, designed for people
The Biography Studio framework draws directly on Abrahams’s academic background in ethnography and identity research. The question design is based on established principles of how autobiographical memory works and how specific, structured questions surface material that general prompts never reach.
“Most people never get the opportunity to do this kind of reflection properly,” says Abrahams. “We spend our lives in the thick of living, always too busy. Biography Studio creates the structure and the space that makes it possible.”
Don’t wait for the tragedy
For Abrahams, the importance of capturing family stories is personal. He grew up knowing his grandfather, who died before he was born, through the stories told by his family. That tradition of storytelling shaped his sense of identity as profoundly as anything he experienced directly.
The service is also designed with families facing memory loss in mind. “Don’t wait for the tragedy to emerge before you find the time to do this,” says Abrahams. “If a diagnosis is looming, or if you simply have an older relative whose stories you do not want to lose, this framework gives you a way to sit with them and have the conversations you might never otherwise have.”
