Cornish lager: New Hellup! lager by Skinner’s Brewery

This is an old story

But you can get up to date with hundreds of new stories on Cornwall at Proper Cornwall.

CORNISH LAGER IS JUST GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. SKINNER’S BREWERY IN TRURO HAS LAUNCHED ITS NEW HELLUP! CORNISH HELLES STYLE LAGER FOR SUMMER 2022 AND HERE’S THE LOWDOWN AND WHERE TO TRY IT. THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Once upon a time, lager in Cornwall wasn’t really a popular thing. This is cider and ale country, so you could keep your lager in the pubs of London and the bars of Continental Europe. But times have been a-changin’ and we at Proper Cornwall, for instance, have been sampling an increasing array of really good local lagers over the past couple of years. There are a couple of well-known stellar brews but, in honesty, some of the best local lagers have been created by the rising stars of the Cornish brewery scene. And our pick of these new lagers for 2022? Hellup!

A crisp Cornish brew for the summer!
Some may expect lager to be a big tradition in Cornwall because it goes so well with a hot summer’s day and if there’s any place in the UK that pairs well with a hot summer’s day, it’s Cornwall. But lager has never really been big news in Cornwall until now. Hellup!, though, is a brew that bucks the trend. It was ‘soft launched’ by the team at Skinner’s Brewery in Truro in September last year but it has been properly launched in a big way this year and it’s officially new and recommended for summer 2022.

Cornish locals will know the name well. We love a spot of good-humoured banter round these parts and we’ve grown up with tales of having a ‘right hellup’, which always happens in a social setting when the mischief really kicks off, more often than not with amusing consequences and sometimes even with proper legendary results. The team at Skinner’s Brewery say they’ve created the lager ‘with gatherings in mind’ and that wherever ‘Hellup! leads, great stories follow!’

Here are the other malty facts: it’s called Hellup!, it’s 5% ABV and it’s a Helles-style lager (Helles means ‘bright’ in German and shows it’s a bright, malt-accented and crisp brew that’s perfect for a summer’s day). Skinner’s Brewery labels it as both ‘a refreshing Cornish lager with real substance’ and ‘a masterful mash-up of styles’.

Clean and crisp
Described as a ‘clean and crisp lager’ with some ‘subtle hops and sweet malts’, Hellup! sees the brewers at Skinner’s combining Magnum and Motueka hops with German Pilsner and Vienna malts to create a ‘smooth and soft golden lager’. The experts say there’s a ‘subtle breadiness’ and some bitter notes but it’s all ‘refreshingly interlaced with pine, herbs and citrus’. It’s easy to drink, balanced in nature and goes really well with a barbecue, al fresco dining, seaside soirees and anywhere on a sunny summer afternoon or evening when there may be one ‘helluva hellup’ on the cards…

But where to sample this crisp ‘n’ malty Hellup! lager this summer? Obviously, you can buy it from the Skinner’s official website here. But perhaps you’d prefer to sample it ‘in the field’? Well, here we give you three big juicy opportunities to try the newest and coolest kid on the Cornish lager block…

Where to sample Hellup! lager this summer…

Skinner’s Brewery

The best way to sample Hellup! lager is to grab a pint from source. There is a new onsite Tap Yard Bar at Skinner’s Brewery in Newham Road, Truro, that serves up the brew alongside pasties, and there’s also a pop-up street food vendors event at the brewery on most Fridays and Saturdays. Plus, the business also has its own pub, The Old Ale House, in Quay Street, Truro, just five minutes walk from the brewery, near Lemon Quay. Read all about the brewery and its offerings here. And then prepare for a proper ol’ hellup once you’ve tasted the new Cornish brew that’s gonna rock the summer!
