THE POLLY JOKE POPPIES 2024 APPEAR BETWEEN LATE MAY AND EARLY JULY. READ ON FOR MORE…

Once a year, a riot takes place on Cornwall’s north coast. Don’t worry, this is a good riot, though. It’s one of colour and natural beauty as the headland at West Pentire between Polly Joke and Crantock near Newquay explodes into a deep red colour as literally hundreds of thousands of poppies burst into life. It’s a fantastic sight that highlights the sheer beauty of nature.

But when is the best time to see the Polly Joke poppies (or the West Pentire poppies as they are also known)? Depending on how mild the weather is, expect to see the wildflowers coming into bloom from late May all the way to early July. There are some lovely walks around the headland which will allow you to spend an hour or two to take in the bloomin’ marvellous views. Pick a clear day to experience the contrasting colours of the sky, meadows, sea and poppies. Take a blanket and picnic and go for a spectacular seasonal sunset.

The West Pentire headland is owned and managed by the National Trust, so there are well-maintained paths which meander through the fields here. But make sure you enjoy the spectacular vistas across the poppy-strewn headland out to sea from those paths as you’re not allowed to just roam across the actual fields. So get out there in May, June and July and see one of north Cornwall’s most spectacular natural sights. Don’t bloomin’ well miss it!
