In case you missed it in the 1990s, The Headland Cornwall hotel in Newquay went all witchy. Or, put better, this grand-yet-imposing Victorian building that looks proudly over the north Cornish coast surfing haven that is Fistral Beach became the location for the 1990 film adaptation of ‘The Witches’, an utter classic written in 1983 by children’s author Roald Dahl.
The film was a smash hit and the hotel, renamed the ‘Hotel Excelsior’ for the movie and often called ‘The Witches Hotel’ for obvious reasons, became a place of pilgrimage for all those, young and old, who adored the adaptation.
Plus, it became a must-visit place for another breed of enthusiast: the horror fan. This was because, despite the PG rating, there were a few scenes in the film, which was created by Jim Henson Productions and starred Angelica Houston, Rowan Atkinson and Jane Horrocks, that are just downright terrifying (lovely ladies revealing themselves as ugly old crones, anyone?).
That was more than 30 years ago but there are still horror fans who make that pilgrimage to the windswept hotel to see where some of the scenes from the movie were shot and to soak up that general witchy atmosphere that’s more in their head than actually on show in the elegant building. Or is it? Well, throughout October 2023, things are getting more than just a little witchy at The Headland…
‘A Wickedly Witchy Afternoon Brew‘ is available between Sunday 1 October and Sunday 5 November 2023. ‘Terrifying treats’ and ‘wonderful cakes’ are up for grabs in this frighteningly good afternoon tea experience. Tea, clotted cream scones and ‘savoury autumnal sandwiches’ all make an appearance too. Expect, just like last year, a beguiling witch to visit the hotel in October. ‘A Wickedly Witchy Sleepover‘ is available between Sunday 1 October and Tuesday 31 October 2023. The offer here is for a three-night stay alongside the ‘Wickedly Witchy Afternoon Brew’ on the second day of your stay. The sleepover includes a Cornish breakfast each morning, a two-course dinner in The Terrace on the same day you arrive and complimentary use of the spa facilities for adults only.
