Truro has been holding all sorts of Christmas events during its Yuletide periods for years. But its BIG Christmas Market is a real BIG draw to the city these days. The market was a smash hit in 2023 and it is expected to be even bigger and better this year!

The whole festive affair is traditionally hosted by the Truro Farmers Market team and all sorts of organisations help to coordinate it including the Truro Business Improvement District (BID), Truro City Council, Visit Truro and headline sponsors.

What’s new for the 2024 Truro Christmas Market?

Well, it’s too early to say but we can say what was introduced in 2023: bespoke wooden cabins that lined Lemon Quay, each one with festive lights and a Christmassy feel as they were also styled by the traders themselves. In fact, some of Cornwall’s finest artisan traders were housed in the cabins, making for a real winter market wonderland experience.

What else was new in 2023? Well, actually, it wasn’t just all about Lemon Quay. There was an extension of the market that popped up on Boscawen Street every Wednesday and Saturday. The extra stalls featured mainly tasty street food and fresh seasonal produce. In fact, a street food and bar area were also new to the seasonal market.

And another new addition: there was a 30-foot-tall Christmas tree slap bang in the centre of the market near to a giant snow globe that visitors could have their photo taken inside. It’s believed that it was the first time a giant snow globe had ever been installed in Lemon Quay.

The 2024 Truro Xmas Market in Cornwall may open, as it did in 2023, with a Father Christmas parade. Also expect late-night shopping on Wednesdays. In 2023, the market was open from 9am to 5pm every day but on Wednesdays, closing time was extended to 9pm for all that late-night bargain hunting.

In 2022, the organisers said that as another Christmas came ‘amid challenging circumstances’, the BIG Christmas Market promised ‘not only an uplifting Yuletide experience’ but the chance ‘to harness that precious festive spending as a force for good’. They also said that the event brought together ‘Cornwall’s finest purveyors of food and drink with sought-after artisan makers’, plus they said that plenty of ‘street food, music and entertainment’ completed the immersive event.

That market in 2022 was a heralded as a huge success and 2023 was even bigger. Expect traders in 2023 to sell all the traditional seasonal wares including food, mulled wine, mince pies, trinkets, crafts, clothes, art, plants and gift ideas. Obviously the fact you can buy from local farmers and small food or crafts producers from around Cornwall is a big draw here.

Also expect a dizzying amount of traders attending on a revolving basis. Plus, there are traditionally local choirs on the bill who seranade shoppers with Christmas songs and carols. The Truro Christmas lights all around also add that extra festive touch to it all. Street food and drink stalls especially feature in the market. The ‘sights, smells and flavours of a Cornish Christmas’ hang heavy in the air.

Delicacies to snap up include cheeses, fish, meat, condiments, sweet treats, locally made craft ales and cider, artisan spirits and Cornish wine. And then there are natural Christmas wreaths to buy alongside unique jewellery, handmade children’s toys, vintage clothes and sustainable, ethically made and locally sourced products to buy throughout December.
