CORNWALL CIRCUS CAMP 2023 FEATURING SWAMP CIRCUS TAKES PLACE BETWEEN THURSDAY 24 AND MONDAY 28 AUGUST 2023 AT THE CHYAN CULTURAL CENTRE JUST OUTSIDE FALMOUTH. LEARN CIRCUS SKILLS FROM THE BEST…
You’ve always wanted to learn to juggle, yeah? Or to go on the swinging trapeze? Or to do acrobatics or perhaps soar towards the sky on a massive trampoline? Well, now you can, if you go down to the Cornwall Circus Camp 2023.
Taking place over five days between Thursday 24 and Monday 28 August 2023, the camp, which features the famous Swamp Circus, teaches people young and old core skills in balance, flexibility, confidence, strength and teamwork. It is set on an organic environmental site and farm at the Chyan Cultural Centre in Halvosso, which is just outside Falmouth and near to Penryn, Helston and the Helford River.
Organisers say that this is a ‘five-day opportunity to get healthy and fit in a beautiful setting’. They also say that it’s all done ‘safely distanced’ with ‘temperature checking from a resident GP’. They say that the circus extravaganza features ‘international expert tutors’ and that all its activities will run from 8am to 9pm each day.
Activities include aerial skills like ‘trapeze silks and hoop’, ‘clown work’, acrobatics, acrobalance (acrobatic art with a partner on the floor), juggling, tight wire, trampolining, learning to use a swinging trapeze, having a go on a unicycle and learning to use the Cyr wheel (a single big ring around the artist). Of course, there are other skills to learn too.
As well as learning circus skills, there’s also rustic camping to enjoy, as well as solar showers, a sauna, a spa, a stream and plenty of woodland to explore. The ‘Circus Café’ is on site, serving up locally sourced vegan food, and there are seven teaching spaces across the area too, including the new ‘Training Dome Big Top’.
The camp, also known as the Circo Kernow 2023, is in its 13th edition this year. The classes cater for all ages and abilities, from those who can swing those trapezes already to those who didn’t think they would ever have the opportunity and want to give it all a try. Again: this whole camp is suitable for adults and children so families are encouraged to come along all together.
The Swamp Circus Trust, based in nearby Penryn, has been running international shows and projects for more than 25 years. It’s actually a charity that offers an array of educational projects that are aimed at improving wellbeing and health for young people. It runs regular workshops but the summer circus camp is a big project for the team. Funded places are being offered by the team for anyone receiving benefits, by the way.
Quit clowning around and hit the big top near Falmouth this August. Get out of your town or village and get into the heart of the beautiful Cornish countryside. Leave your technology behind and learn new skills as you join the circus for five fun-filled days. Roll up, roll up! Swamp Circus is here!
